The Bokel double wall ring system has existed since around 850 AD and once served as a refuge for the population. In the early Middle Ages this was the seat of the court for the entire Ammerland, later only for the Rastede office. Here bokelburg and old chamber peasant law was spoken, which was confirmed by the Oldenburg counts until the 17th century.
The overall diameter of the facility is around 100 meters, the Burgplatz has a size of 55 x 65 meters. Inside, around 12 meters wide, there were lounges and storage rooms. Most of the earth walls have been preserved, the eastern part was leveled in the 19th century. In 1949 the remaining western part was bought by the Oldenburg state and placed under protection. 40 years later, the Wiefelstede community carried out extensive restoration work on the Bokel double wall ring system. Today it is a popular destination for cyclists and hikers.
